Team SPICe Lab

World-class isotope science applied to Chile's challenges.

SPICe Lab is led by a geochemist with doctoral training in Australia and postdoctoral experience at Princeton University — a trajectory normally only available in large international laboratories, now applied directly in southern Chile.

Dr. Marcos Salas-Saavedra, founder of SPICe Lab

Marcos is a geochemist with nearly two decades of experience using isotopes and trace elements applied to Earth's biogeochemical systems. He completed his PhD in Geochemistry at The University of Queensland (Australia) and conducted postdoctoral research at the Niespolo Lab at Princeton University, working on U-Th geochronology of carbonates and high-resolution paleoclimate proxies.

He has operated advanced analytical equipment — LA-ICP-MS, MC-ICP-MS, LIBS, and SEM — in laboratories across Australia, the United States, and Chile, and has presented his research at leading international conferences including the AGU Fall Meeting.

Through SPICe Lab, he brings this international trajectory to directly serve research projects, mining, agriculture, and institutions in Chile and the South Pacific. The differentiator is not just access to advanced techniques — it's the interpretation that connects data with real decisions.

Scientific Advisors & Collaborators

SPICe Lab is built with the support of a growing network of colleagues, laboratories, and institutions. As formal scientific advisors and external collaborators are confirmed, their profiles will be added here with their authorization.

The idea is to maintain a flexible structure, where specific experts can participate according to each project's needs, while SPICe Lab serves as the central coordination and interpretation point.
