Sample Submission
How to prepare, document and coordinate samples for geochemical analysis.
SPICe Lab is currently in the development stage. Analytical measurements are carried out through collaborating international laboratories, while SPICe Lab assists with preparation, documentation, coordination and interpretation of results.
Before sending samples
Please contact us before preparing or shipping any material. Each project has different analytical requirements, and we will help identify the appropriate techniques, partner laboratories and sample formats. Early coordination avoids delays, unnecessary costs and sample loss.
Field sampling support
For many projects, the quality of geochemical data depends strongly on how samples are collected. SPICe Lab can assist with sampling design, field protocols, and on-site sample collection when required. This ensures proper documentation, contamination control and consistency across the dataset.
Field support can be coordinated for water, soils, sediments, carbonates, mineral materials and other sample types, depending on project needs and logistics.
Types of samples we can work with
SPICe Lab can assist with a wide range of materials, including:
- water samples (streams, groundwater, rainfall, lakes, brines)
- soil and sediment samples
- carbonates (travertines, speleothems, marine and freshwater carbonates)
- mineral grains and geological materials
- industrial materials (e.g., brines, process residues, powders)
- biogeochemical samples (plant material, organic matter)
Sample preparation guidelines
Specific requirements depend on the analytical technique and the chosen laboratory. After discussing your project, we will provide tailored instructions. General guidance includes:
- Water samples: clean, acid-washed bottles; filtration or acidification may be recommended.
- Soils/sediments: air-dried or oven-dried; sieved if necessary; avoid metal contamination.
- Carbonates: small chips or drilled powders; avoid glue, epoxy or metal tools.
- Minerals: hand-picked grain separates or small fragments packaged in vials.
If preferred, SPICe Lab can coordinate or perform the collection of samples in the field to ensure they meet the requirements of the analytical technique and partner laboratory.
Required documentation
Every batch of samples must be accompanied by a sample list including:
- sample IDs (unique identifiers)
- sample type and material
- collection location (as detailed as needed)
- collection date (if applicable)
- requested analyses
- relevant notes (preservation, special conditions, hazards)
Shipping and logistics
Once the analytical plan is defined, we will coordinate where the samples should be sent (Chile or international). Shipping requirements vary depending on:
- sample type,
- destination laboratory,
- local and international regulations.
We can assist in preparing documentation and choosing appropriate packaging to ensure safe transit.
After analysis
When results are delivered by the partner laboratory, SPICe Lab supports:
- quality checks and verification,
- data interpretation,
- visualisation and reporting, and
- integration with other datasets.
